Keep an Eye Out for the Grunion!
Keep an eye out for the grunion on your beaches, possibly appearing a few days after the full moon. Cabrillo Marine Aquarium holds grunion events and is a wealth of information about this fish mating migration and will be holding an event for this upcoming grunion run. Keep in mind it is illegal to take any grunion now as closed season is April 1 through June 30. Open season is July 1- March 31 of the following year with a bag limit of 30 fish per person (with a valid fishing license) and without use of ANY tools to catch them. Happy viewing!

Domoic acid is a naturally occurring marine neurotoxin made from certain algae. When it rains, runoff from land, specifically urban and agricultural runoff, can increase nutrient input which causes this type of algae to rapidly grow. These neurotoxins can cause lethargy, foaming at the mouth, seizures, brain damage and death in animals like sea lions and dolphins when contaminated fish are consumed. This type of bacteria is also harmful to humans and can be contracted through ingestion of infected fish and shellfish. Infected shellfish, specifically, can cause Amnesic Shellfish Poisoning (ASP). Coming into contact with infected water may also cause skin irritation so proceed with caution when thinking about heading into the water!
What Do I Do When I See a Sick Animal?
According to LA County's Marine Mammal Care Center, the following steps are suggested when you spot a potentially sick seal or sea lion:
Give them their space- Never approach a marine mammal, they may be very sick and keeping at least 50 feet away is advised
Take pictures with zoom- Again, don't get too close!
Keep your pets away- They can scare the marine life and may injure or get infected. So - you guessed it! - stay away.
Call the rescue team!- they know what they're doing. Take note of where you are and call their hotline!
